Norberg When Marian McQuade sent the draft of a bill to Congress, asking for the institution of National Grandparents Day, she had a distinct vision as to what the purpose of the day should be. The West Virginia mother of 15 (and grandmother to many more) wanted a time set aside to honor traditions and family history as communicated by the older generations. She also felt it was an effective way to encourage families to gather often to share and learn from each other. In 1978, Congress agreed, and the first Sunday after Labor Day was designated. This year, Grandparents Day falls on September 10. National Friendship Day was established by Congress in 1935, and it was determined that the new holiday would fall on the first Sunday in August. For over 240 years, July 4th has been a day set apart to celebrate the unique freedoms that we have come to appreciate in the United States.
